CIABOT BERTON

From the 1800s to the end of the 1950s, Luigi Oberto, together with his father, Giovenale, cultivated two hectares of Nebbiolo on the hill of Bricco San Biagio, and sold the grapes at the Alba market.
In recent years, in order to avoid the decisions of brokers and traders imposing unfair prices on them,

Luigi decided to build a cellar and produce wine himself, in order to give more value to their work. Barolo’s first growths were bottled in 1961.
Despite the few thousand bottles, Luigi sells his wine in bulk to the great vineyards of the region. Over the years, he has acquired many other lands devoted to the cultivation of vines.

The current cellar built in the 1980s, located on the site, has always been known as Ciabot Berton. Here was a small building (Ciabot, in Piedmontese dialect) once owned by a man called « Berton », who, in an attempt to produce fireworks by hand, caused the fire that destroyed the roof.

Until today, in the subsoil, you can see the ruins of the old Ciabot that gave the company its name, surrounded by the vineyards of Nebbiolo.
Aware of the quality and potential of the Nebbiolo vine and grape, Luigi decided to vinify separately the grapes from different vineyards and selecting the best batches of Barolo in order to be bottled. In this way, by combining a number of important production measures with Luigi’s great experience, Ciabot Berton wines are becoming increasingly known and appreciated.
